Blood Sugar Out of Whack? Here’s What to Do!

Blood sugar (glucose) spikes are terrible for your health. They can lead to excess weight, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even autoimmune disease. The goal for great health as you age is to aim for balanced blood sugar.

Unless you are wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM), you probably don’t know when your blood sugar is dysregulated. There are some things to look out for.

  • Do you get super hungry and cranky (hangry) as you wait for your next meal?

  • Does your energy take a nosedive particularly in mid-afternoon?

  • Are you experiencing strong cravings at various points or throughout the day?

If you are experiencing any of these issues, your blood sugar is likely out of control. If you have recently eaten a huge meal or a meal/snack full of simple carbs and sugar, you can help blunt the spike. Here are things you can do to help get it back under control quickly:

  1. Walk for 20 mins after all meals, but particularly your largest meal or walk some stairs for 10-15 mins.

  2. Drink decaf or green tea with lemon after a heavy meal.

  3. Take 1TBS of apple cider vinegar in water (or in a vinaigrette) before or within 20 mins after your big meal.

  4. Eat some nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews) or almond butter after your meal to blunt the blood sugar response.

  5. Use herbs, like berberine (supplement pill) or cinnamon, to control the blood sugar spike. Berberine has shown to depress blood sugar spikes by 25-30%.
