I listened so you don’t have to.

Dr. Mariza of the Essentially You podcast recently interviewed McCall McPherson, physician’s assistant and thyroid expert, about Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition where your body attacks your own thyroid gland, leaving it sluggish and resulting in hypothyroidism. Symptoms can manifest as fatigue, weight gain, insulin resistance, brain fog, and even joint pain.
McPherson noted that the primary causes of Hashimoto’s symptoms are intolerances to dairy, gluten, legumes, grains, and nuts. Sometimes just removing dairy and gluten for 3 months can dramatically improve the condition. Alcohol can also wreak havoc on those with Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism.
Luckily, there are dietary and lifestyle choices that can manage the illness and reduce symptoms:
Incorporating a green juice in your diet will help improve energy;
Practicing intermittent fasting can reduce overall inflammation and pain;
Supplementing with 200 mg of Selenium, 500 mg Glutathione, B vitamins and zinc;
Doing gentle exercises like waking, yoga, and Pilates, along with some resistance training;
Staying away from cross fit and too much high intensity interval training (HIIT);
Reducing stress will bring relief from some symptoms; as well as
Taking adaptogens like Ashwagandha in the evening, along with 150-200mg magnesium.
Unfortunately, even if your Hashimoto’s antibodies improve you may still need to stay on medication because the thyroid has been damaged.
