What the Latest Exercise Research Is Telling Us

I’m always reading the latest research on exercise—not because I think we need more things to add to our already-full lives, but because I want to know which forms of movement really give us the biggest return on our time.


And lately, the research has been reinforcing something I’ve been saying for years: exercise is about so much more than burning calories.


Here are a few findings that caught my attention.


🧱 Isometric Exercise May Be a Blood Pressure Secret Weapon


Wall sits and planks—those exercises where you're not moving but your muscles are definitely working—are called isometrics, and they may deserve more attention.


A 2026 meta-analysis combining 40 randomized controlled trials found that isometric exercise was associated with an average reduction of about 6.6 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 2.6 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. Wall squats performed several times a week appeared particularly effective.


Another 2026 analysis found that isometric handgrip training also produced meaningful reductions in blood pressure.


My takeaway: Isometrics aren't replacing your walks, cardio or strength training, but they're an incredibly efficient addition—particularly if blood pressure is something you're watching.


Try a wall sit for 20–30 seconds, rest and repeat. Build gradually and keep breathing!


🏋️‍♀️ Heavy Strength Training May Do More Than Build Muscle


A fascinating 2026 study looked at 13 postmenopausal women performing resistance exercise at either high or moderate intensity.


Both workouts increased circulating immune cells, but the heavier workout produced a different response, including increases in HSP27, a stress-protective protein, and IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine.


It's a very small study, and it measured an immediate response rather than long-term health outcomes. But it adds to our understanding that strength training affects much more than muscle.


Your muscles are communicating with the rest of your body.


Another reason to keep challenging them as we age.


🧠 Fitness May Be One of the Best Investments for Your Brain


Researchers followed 1,491 adults aged 70–77 for almost nine years and found that those with higher cardiorespiratory fitness had substantially lower rates of Alzheimer's disease.

Each additional 1 mL/kg/min of VO₂peak was associated with approximately a 4% lower risk of Alzheimer's.


This was an observational study, so it doesn't prove that fitness prevents Alzheimer's. But it adds to growing evidence linking cardiovascular fitness with brain health.


And here's my favorite part: the fitness you build now may matter decades from now.


That's why I don't want us waiting until our 70s to start caring about cardiovascular fitness.


🦵 Cramps May Be More Complicated Than “Drink More Electrolytes”


We've all heard that muscle cramps mean we're dehydrated or low on electrolytes. But new research suggests the story is more complicated.


A 2026 study of ultra-trail runners found that cramping was more closely associated with muscle damage and fatigue than with dehydration or low sodium levels. Interestingly, fewer of the runners who experienced cramps regularly performed lower-body strength training.


This doesn't mean hydration and electrolytes don't matter—they certainly do during prolonged exercise.


But it reinforces the idea that neuromuscular fatigue and strength may also play a role in exercise-associated cramps.


Another reason not to skip leg day!


⏱️ Three Minutes of Vigorous Movement?


This one made me stop scrolling.


A new study involving more than 59,000 UK Biobank participants found that replacing sedentary time with short bursts of vigorous physical activity was associated with a lower risk of developing several cancers—including 13 cancers previously linked with physical inactivity.


We're talking about very short bursts of movement—what researchers sometimes call “exercise snacks.”


Think running up a flight of stairs, walking briskly up a hill, carrying groceries quickly or doing a few minutes of vigorous cycling.


Important caveat: This was an observational study, so it doesn't prove that three minutes of exercise prevents cancer, and it certainly doesn't mean three minutes is all the exercise we need.


But I love the bigger message:


Movement doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.


You may not have 45 minutes for a workout today. You probably have three minutes.

Use them.


❤️ And Don't Forget Cardio


One final point from the research on visceral fat: cardio still matters.


Walking, cycling, jogging, swimming and other aerobic activities can help reduce visceral fat, while strength training helps preserve and build muscle—particularly during weight loss.


So rather than asking, “Should I lift weights or do cardio?”


I'd ask: “How can I fit both into my week?”


Add in mobility, balance and those little bursts of vigorous movement, and you've got a much more complete longevity toolkit.


The Big Picture


When I step back and look at all of this research, I don't see a prescription for one magical workout.


I see a reminder to keep moving—and keep challenging your body in different ways.


🏋️‍♀️ Lift weights to maintain muscle and strength.


🚶‍♀️ Walk and do aerobic exercise for cardiovascular and metabolic health.


🧱 Add isometrics for an efficient strength challenge and potential blood-pressure benefits.


⏱️ Sneak in short bursts of vigorous movement when you can.


🧘‍♀️ Work on mobility and balance so you can keep doing the things you love.


And perhaps most importantly, don't wait until you're older to start.


Healthy aging isn't something that suddenly begins at 60, 70 or 80. The strength, fitness and

physical resilience we carry into those decades are being built by what we do today. That said, you are never too old to start strength training and exercising.


The latest research keeps reminding me that the basics—move your body, build muscle, get your heart rate up and recover well—are still some of the most powerful tools we have.

And that's pretty encouraging.
